Through Higgins, we import and supply bulk bitumen as well as manufacturing asphalt and specialist bitumen products.

Our modern bitumen emulsion plant produces high-performance bitumen emulsions for chip sealing. The semi-continuous plant uses state-of-the-art process control and produces some of the best-performing bitumen in the country with synthetic polymers and additive blended in to improve durability and engineering performance. The plant also converts bitumen into hot and emulsified products ranging from general purpose emulsified bitumen to specialised spray seal, slurry seal systems, crack seal and colour coatings.

Higgins has also been manufacturing asphalt since the 1970s. The team has 12 permanent and two mobile production plants we use the latest technology to blend and mix aggregate, bitumen, modifiers, polymers, fillers, and pelletised fibre. The team covers the complete spectrum of asphalt mixes, from hard-wearing rut resistant mixes like SMA (stone mastic asphalt) to open mixes designed for lower noise and better water dispersion.

Bitumen and asphalt quality is assured through Higgins’ IANZ-registered laboratories that design all formulas and test samples in-house to ensure they meet quality and performance specification.

BIM (Building information modeling) Management involves overseeing BIM processes, defining project requirements, managing data, and ensuring effective collaboration.

Our BIM team is ready to partner with mature clients that want the most value out of end-to-end BIM implementation. They are supported by a strong internal IT team that provides the hardware and software needed to support seamless BIM implementation.

Higgins business Specialised Engineering Services is building bitumen tankers and sprayers for customers throughout New Zealand.

These sprayers are built by skilled craftsmen using the best quality materials. This has earned them a reputation for reliability and durability.

Specialised Engineering Services also services, reconditions and upgrades bitumen sprayers and manufactures bulk bitumen trailers from single-axle trailers to quad-axle semi-trailers.

CAD and Modelling utilises software to create digital representations of objects. This allows engineers, construction workers and project teams to visualise and simulate methodologies before construction starts.

We have an internal CAD drafting team that focuses on servicing our temporary works designs, as well as site planning and visualisations of construction methodologies for tenders and projects. They use a range of modern industry standard CAD programmes to turn ideas into reality.

For example, this is a model of Kaitoke Flume created to check constructability and staging before construction started.

Construction Engineering involves the creative and systematic application of engineering principles to design, plan, and manage construction projects. This ensures projects are safe, efficient, and cost-effective.

Fletcher Construction employs a wide team of Construction Engineering professionals who design, plan and manage construction methodology for a range of infrastructure types.

We also have a wealth of experience delivering some of New Zealand’s most critical infrastructure using safe, efficient and cost-effective methods.

Construction Surveying utilises precise measurements and data collection to establish reference points and monitor accurate project progress.

Brian Perry Civil has built a reputation as a leader in the New Zealand piling market since 1973, with experience evolving from temporary shoring to deep pipeline excavations.

Piling applications include foundations and retention works for high rise buildings across all sectors, heavy industrial plant, bridging and marine structures, pump stations, and pipelines.

BPC operates across a wide range of ground conditions throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific – from deep alluvial gravels and silts to the complex geology of Auckland’s volcanic region.

This experienced and professional team is regularly approached for ECI input at the pre-construction stage to assist with technical solutions and innovative methods for demanding foundation applications.

BPC self-performs foundations scopes of work, backed by our inhouse Engineering Services team. Strong relationships with New Zealand’s leading geotechnical consultants add to our technical capability. A full bentonite set up, with a number of de-sanders and holdings tanks, means that whatever the challenge, BPC has the equipment, the personnel, and the know-how to deliver.

Geometric Modelling applies mathematical principles to describe shapes in two or three dimensions. It is widely used in computer-aided design, manufacturing, and technical fields.

Our Digital Engineers are highly skilled in representing physical objects digitally through solid, surface and parametric modelling.  This ensures that design concepts are fit for construction and real-life constraints can be communicated appropriately.

Brian Perry Civil delivers general civil works, either as the main contractor for the project or as a key subcontractor or sub-alliance partner.

We construct and deliver precast and in situ concrete elements, including Super T beams (having one of the only two moulds in NZ) slabs, box culverts, streetscape upgrades, footpaths, pavements, and cycleways.

Our environmental remediation capability extends to stream realignment works, usually forming part of wider culvert and subsoil drainage projects, along with bank stabilisation work including rock revetment and sea wall construction.

Working in urban environments, we construct manholes and catchpits, and redirect live services – sewer, power, gas, and telecommunications. We limit disruption to the communities we operate in through astute traffic and pedestrian management.

While we are leaders in deep, technically challenging foundations, we also deliver all manner of retaining walls and other less complex ground engineering elements and solutions.

We offer a selection of retaining walls for a wide range of applications. The wall type selected depends on the ground conditions, the standard of finish, and the level of watertightness required:

Innovation and Construction Technology encompasses advancements in materials, processes, and tools that enhance construction efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

We have a dedicated internal expert who's constantly hunting for tools, processes and platforms to provide significant value to our site teams and clients. This includes looking for 'big-ticket' items to make the entire Engineering Services team more efficient and provide solutions to some of our biggest challenges.

The Higgins team has laboratory facilities to test materials to ensure they meet precise performance specifications, as well as supporting product development.

The laboratories are International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ) accredited and equipped to test a comprehensive range of materials and products, from soil types and aggregates to asphalt and bitumen.

The Higgins team manages many central and local government maintenance contracts for state highways, urban and rural roads. They ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of road networks and look after all aspects of road maintenance from ‘fenceline to fenceline'. 

Brian Perry Civil specialises in confined space industrial maintenance services to the petrochemical, dairy, and industrial sectors.

Brian Perry Civil offers substantial marine capability with the largest jack-up barge and most extensive fleet of specialist construction plant and equipment in New Zealand.

BPC has helped to deliver some of New Zealand’s key marine-based projects since 1976, with marine construction experts working alongside clients like Ports of Auckland, Centreport, and South Port to deliver strategic operational assets of regional and national importance.

Brian Perry Civil constructs pipelines using a full range of trenched and trenchless technologies.

The team excels in delivering high pressure concrete/steel/polyethylene/polymer pipelines. This includes extensive experience in constructing varying diameter trunk sewers, stormwater networks, and potable water mains. They have also completed numerous complex live sewer cut-ins and connections.

BPC’s drainlayer expertise ranges from installing pipes as small as 35mm ducting for communications cabling, to welding together complex 1,965mm concrete lined steel (CLS) pipes. They drive cross-organisational coordination and stakeholder management on site, as these assets are often delivered in urban or brownfield environments.

Higgins has in-house drainage capability which includes project management, excavation, pipe installation, controlled backfill and reinstatement, based in Levin, Manawatu and Napier. 

Brian Perry Civil delivers pump station construction and upgrades for a range of Councils and Water authorities across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Alongside our design partners, BPC applies innovative construction techniques – particularly in busy urban environments, with the introduction of the segmental caisson method into New Zealand. Using precast concrete segments, the system allows each shaft ring to be constructed above ground and then the structure is jacked into the ground before the next ring is added. It is faster, quieter, and safer than traditional construction methods and requires a significantly smaller construction footprint.

BPC also constructs portable and floating raw water pump stations, in often challenging conditions, using specialist marine equipment including several jack-up-barges.

Reality Capture refers to capturing existing physical environments digitally, often through 3D scanning, 360 panoramas or photogrammetry, to create accurate virtual representations.

Our digital engineers and surveyors utilise reality capture techniques that often cross the borders of team roles, combining technology and techniques across disciplines. Combined with the latest 360 cameras, drones, laser scanner and lidar units they can capture construction sites in detail that unlocks the potential of the technology.

As the Renewable Energy sector expands, Higgins brings a wealth of experience to new energy projects. This comes from over 20 years’ experience in wind energy works infrastructure.

Higgins has been head civil contractor on six of New Zealand’s largest wind farms which generate over 50% of Aotearoa's wind energy. The team has designed, constructed and delivered civil works infrastructure, including 226 wind turbine foundations and 130km access roads.

Higgins has a track record of working collaboratively with clients and developers to manage risk and deliver to client objectives.
