Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway opened

news pp2oopening

This week we’re celebrating an early Christmas present for travellers in and out of Wellington: the opening of the Peka Peka to Ōtaki Expressway.

The project was completed by Fletcher Construction with the support of Higgins and was officially opened with a Whakawātea (iwi blessing) by Nga Hapu o Ōtaki yesterday. This was followed by a ribbon cutting attended by Associate Minister for Transport Kieran McAnulty, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Director of Regional Relationships Wellington Emma Speight, Waka Kotahi Chief of Staff Richard May, Kāpiti Coast Mayor Janet Holborow, Horowhenua Mayor Bernie Wanden and other local dignitaries. With official proceedings out of the way, the road itself will be fully open by tomorrow.

Work on this project began in 2017. There have been significant delays due to weather and Covid, but we’re really proud to have done the hard mahi to get the 13 kilometre, four-lane expressway open in time for Christmas travellers. A special thank you to the local community for your patience with this project. It’s been a long journey to get to this point, we hope you enjoy the expressway.
