Kaiwera Downs Stage Two work underway
Work is officially underway on the second and final stage of the Kaiwera Downs wind farm near Gore.
Our team will undertake a significant scope of work over the next two years, including 1.3million cubic metres of earthworks and 42km of access tracks. In addition, 19,000 m3 of concrete and 1,700 tonnes of reinforcing steel are required to construct the concrete turbine foundations where Higgins will be supported by Firth Concrete and Fletcher Reinforcing.
We celebrated the project getting underway at a sod turning, accompanying Mercury NZ’s Chief Executive Vincent (Vince) Hawksworth, Gore District Council elected member Joe Stringer, representatives from iwi and hāpu, Gore District Council, community members, landowners, Mercury staff, and fellow contractors.
The entire 46-turbine wind farm will generate up to 198MW of renewable energy when stage two is completed in 2027. It will also stand as the largest wind farm in the South Island when constructed.
