Fletcher wins at NAWIC awards

Fletcher Construction’s women showed they’re a force to be reckoned with at the recent National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) awards. With six nominees, and a team converging from across the country to offer them support, it was a fantastic night to celebrate Mana Wāhine from across the whole industry.

The team was particularly proud of Brian Perry Civil Site Engineer ‘Ofa Halatanu who won the award for Rising Star – site based. ‘Ofa brought her extremely proud parents along to the Te Papa awards ceremony, and said it was extremely humbling for all of them to be there for event. ‘When we arrived, I went into shock. It’s a big deal! It’s not often that my parents and I are invited into spaces like that, so the whole experience was quite new to us”. ‘Ofa was thrilled to even be nominated, so to win her category was an extremely proud moment for the whole family.

‘Ofa has been working in the piling team, and is about to move to the Kaitoke Flume Bridge project in Wellington. “I love my job! I love piling. When I was studying I didn’t really know what it was, but I’ve stumbled across something I’m really enjoying”.  

Higgins’ Shaheen Mangera received highly commended in her category of Excellence in Construction Administration. Fletcher Construction was also represented by finalists Carla Verryt (Student Excellence Award), Momo May (Rising Star - site based), Rebecca Staples (Rising Star - office based) and Tanya Sundnes (Outstanding Leader of the Year - office based).

Judges received a record-breaking 190 nominations in this years awards, with 53 finalists across 11 categories.
