With a strong customer focus, Higgins provides a high level of technical expertise, project management capability and quality assurance. 
Higgins was founded by Irish immigrant Dan Higgins in Manawatu in 1958 and has grown to a dynamic company involved in civil construction and the manufacture of bitumen products. In 2016, Higgins was purchased by Fletcher Building and is now part of the Fletcher Construction family of brands. 
Today we have specialist expertise in a wide range of areas: 
  • Major infrastructure - We design and build major infrastructure projects including wind farms, airport runways and port hardstand container infrastructure. We also work in alliance partnerships on major roading projects.
  • Road maintenance - Working in collaboration with our clients, we provide urban and rural road maintenance services.
  • Regional infrastructure - We design and build a diverse range of community infrastructure including commercial and residential developments, local body infrastructure, car parks and sports infrastructure. This includes pavement construction, spray sealing, asphalt paving, drainage, traffic management and road marking.
  • Construction product manufacture - We manufacture bitumen-based products as well as bitumen equipment (Specialised Engineering Services) and road signage (Approach Signs).

Specialised Engineering Services builds bitumen tankers and sprayers for customers throughout New Zealand.

Our bitumen equipment has a reputation for being among the most reliable and hardest working in the country. Specialised Engineering Services, which was acquired by Higgins in 2004, also services, re-conditions and upgrades any existing bitumen sprayer.  Each of our sprayers is custom-built to suit customer requirements by a skilled team based in Palmerston North. They use materials suitable for the robust nature of the bitumen industry.

Specialised Engineering Services also manufactures bulk bitumen trailers from single axle to quad-axle semi-trailers.

The company’s Palmerston North engineering workshop welcomes equipment from around New Zealand and assists with mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical repairs in the field. It upgrades and reconditions older sprayers with new technology and transfers existing bitumen sprayers onto brand new trucks. Spares of most consumable parts are stocked at the workshop and the skilled engineering staff at Specialised Engineering Services manufactures parts that are not readily available.

Customers include contractors, local body councils, traffic management companies and heavy vehicle roading companies. Approach Signs also supplies traffic signage and equipment to schools and manufacturing businesses.

The company embraces change and is committed to providing clients with a high level of technical expertise, delivery efficiency and quality assurance.

Approach Signs was originally formed in 1997 and run by owners in Kapiti before it was bought by Higgins in 2001.  Several years later, in 2008, Higgins invested in a new purpose-built factory and administration building in Paraparaumu.
